Do You Know How To Keep Your Child Safe Online?

There are so many controversies about kids and social media.

This is what people have said. 

👉🏽👉🏽  Parents can get sued by social media platforms if their kids are caught on a platform they're not old enough to be on.

👉🏽👉🏽  Social media platforms are nothing but trouble for kids. 

👉🏽👉🏽  Kids shouldn't be on social media. 

👉🏽👉🏽  I don’t need to monitor my child’s devices. They’re responsible and know what to not do.

👉🏽👉🏽  As long as my child’s account is private, they’ll be ok. 

But the thing is, most parents don't know enough about the dangers and safety measures they should implement to keep their kids safe online.

That’s why before you give your child a device that allows them to get on social media, YOU MUST educate yourself first. 

To give you an idea about why you should seek out education about social media dangers, here are some stats. 

According to the Pew Research Center studies, the main method that parents monitor their children’s use of the web is by limiting the use of their devices as a whole.  

✔️  The top three most used are Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram. 
This is important to know because the average age of a child in the U.S. who encounters porn by accident is between the ages of 7 and 8 years old. 😔 YUP! 

✔️  Teens say social media helps strengthen friendships and provide emotional support, but can also lead to drama, feeling pressure to post certain types of content, negative self-body image, depression, and more.

However, they experience a lot more depression, anxiety, and self-doubt because they compare themselves to the curated images they see online.

✔️  Teen Twitter use has grown significantly: 24% of online teens use Twitter, up from 16% in 2011. 

While it’s great that our youth want to be up to date with what is going on in the world, they experience anxiety over some news and often acquire beliefs that might go against their home values. 

✔️  Teens are sharing more information about themselves on social media sites than they did in the past. 

The Federal Trade Commission has seen a rise in identity theft over the years. What’s becoming noticeable is that the victims are often minors. The hard Research Associates conducted research about this issue back in 2013 and found that 76% of teens were concerned regarding their privacy being invaded and 34% of teens said they shared one of their usernames and passwords with someone other than their parent or guardian. 

So, you see, online dangers vary and it is your responsibility to be in the know so that you can educate your child so they can stay safe.
